Highlights

Dimension and brightness, customized for you

Highlights at Bluffton Hair Lounge

Highlights are one of the most versatile ways to add brightness and dimension to your hair. Whether you want a subtle lift or a dramatic change, foil highlights give your stylist precise control over placement, shade, and saturation — something freehand techniques alone cannot always achieve.

At Bluffton Hair Lounge, our colorists tailor every set of highlights to the individual. We consider your natural base color, skin tone, face shape, and how much maintenance you want before we pick up a single foil. The result is color that looks intentional and flattering, not like it came from a kit.

Types of Highlights

Foil Highlights

The classic technique. Hair is sectioned and woven onto foils with lightener, creating clean, defined streaks of brightness. Foils give us control over exactly which pieces get lifted and how light they go. This is the go-to for anyone who wants noticeable contrast and even coverage.

Babylights

Ultra-fine highlights that mimic the soft, multi-tonal dimension you see in children's hair. Babylights use very thin sections in the foil, creating a seamless, natural effect. If "I just want it to look like the sun hit it" is your vibe, babylights are the answer.

Partial Highlights

Focused on the top layers and face-framing pieces, partial highlights brighten the areas that are most visible without processing the entire head. This is a great option if you want a noticeable lift on a shorter timeline and smaller budget.

Full Highlights

Foils placed throughout the entire head for maximum brightness and dimension. Full highlights are the choice when you want a big change or all-over lightness. They take longer but the payoff is worth it.

Lowlights

The opposite of highlights — darker pieces woven in to add depth and contrast. Lowlights work especially well for blondes who want more dimension or anyone growing out their highlights who wants a smoother transition.

Foilayage

A hybrid technique combining balayage painting with foils for processing. You get the soft, blended look of balayage with the lifting power of foils. Foilayage is great for anyone who wants the best of both worlds — natural gradation with a brighter result.

Highlights vs. Balayage

We get this question constantly, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want. Foil highlights create more defined, consistent lightness. Balayage creates a softer, more graduated effect. Neither is better — they are different tools for different looks.

Many of our clients in Bluffton actually combine the two. Face-framing foils with balayage through the back, or babylights on top with a painted blend underneath. Your stylist can help you figure out the right mix during your consultation.

Our Highlighting Specialists

Our color team — including Taylor, Alyssa, and Jenni — can handle everything from a simple partial to a complex full head with lowlights. We match you with the stylist whose schedule and strengths fit your goals.

What to Expect

Your appointment starts with a consultation where we look at your current color, discuss your goals, and plan the placement. Once we are aligned, foils go in section by section. Processing time varies — lighter results take a bit longer.

After rinsing, we tone to the perfect shade. Toning is where the magic happens; it is the step that turns raw lifted hair into the specific blonde, caramel, or champagne shade you are after. We finish with a treatment and blowout so you leave looking polished.

Budget about 2 to 3 hours for your visit. Partial highlights are faster, full sets take the full window. Touch-ups every 8 to 12 weeks keep everything looking fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between partial and full highlights?
Partial highlights focus on specific sections — usually the top layers and face-framing pieces. Full highlights go throughout the entire head for more all-over brightness. Partial is faster and less expensive, while full gives a more dramatic change.
How long do highlights take?
Partial highlights typically take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Full highlights run 2 to 3 hours depending on hair length and thickness. We include toning and a finishing style in that time.
How often should I get my highlights touched up?
Most clients come in every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on how defined or blended they like the grow-out. Babylights and foilayage tend to grow out more softly, so you can stretch them longer.
Can I get highlights if I have colored hair?
Usually, yes. Your stylist will evaluate your current color and hair condition during the consultation. If your hair has been previously processed with box dye or dark color, we may recommend a different approach or a multi-session plan.
What are babylights?
Babylights are ultra-fine, closely spaced highlights that mimic the natural dimension you see in children's hair. They create a very subtle, natural-looking brightness without obvious streaks.
